Make restaurant-style, soft and chewy breadsticks at home. This recipe delivers the buttery, garlicky flavor you love, perfect as a side for pasta or soup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus more for brushing
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted (for glaze)
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl or stand mixer, mix the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 to 7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a dough hook on medium speed for 5 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Gently punch down the risen dough. Roll or pat the dough out onto the prepared baking sheet into a rough rectangle, about 1/2 inch thick.
  7. Use a pizza cutter or knife to cut the dough into strips, about 1 inch wide.
  8. Bake for 10 to 14 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.
  9. While the breadsticks bake, prepare the garlic butter glaze: Melt the remaining 1/2 cup of butter in a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl. Stir in the garlic powder, dried parsley, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  10. Immediately after removing the breadsticks from the oven, brush the warm garlic butter mixture generously over the tops of the hot breadsticks.
  11. Serve the soft and chewy breadsticks warm.

Notes

  • For cheesy breadsticks, sprinkle 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese over the tops immediately after brushing with the garlic butter glaze.
  • If you prefer a quicker rise, place the dough in a slightly warm oven (turned off) to proof.
  • You can use instant yeast by mixing it directly with the dry ingredients, skipping the proofing step with the water.
