Make this simple twist on a classic comfort meal. We swap regular buns for thick, buttery Texas toast, creating a hearty, saucy sandwich perfect for quick weeknight dinners or feeding a crowd.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices Texas toast (thick-cut bread)
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Cook until the vegetables soften, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir well to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let it cook uncovered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly. This creates your flavorful sloppy joe filling.
  6. While the filling simmers, prepare the Texas toast. Spread the softened butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
  7. Toast the bread in a separate skillet or on a griddle over medium heat, butter-side down, until golden brown and crisp, about 2 to 3 minutes per side.
  8. To assemble, place four slices of toast butter-side down on a baking sheet. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over the toast.
  9. If using cheese, place one slice of cheddar cheese on top of the meat mixture on each slice.
  10. Place the baking sheet under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Top each serving with the remaining slices of toast to create a sandwich. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the ground beef with ground pork or turkey.
  • If you skip the cheese, you can toast the bread lightly in the oven instead of pan-frying for a less buttery base.
  • This recipe makes excellent leftovers; store the meat mixture separately from the toast for best results when reheating.
