Bake soft, fluffy, and buttery homemade dinner rolls that are ready in about one hour. This reliable recipe delivers tender crumb and a golden crust, perfect for any family dinner or holiday meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (105°F to 115°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let this mixture stand for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. Stir in the 1/4 cup melted butter, salt, and beaten eggs into the yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add 3 cups of the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough, adding the remaining flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 5 to 7 minutes. The dough should be slightly tacky but not sticky.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  6. Gently punch down the risen dough. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  7. Arrange the dough balls in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan, leaving a small space between each roll for them to expand.
  8. Cover the pan loosely and let the rolls rise again in a warm spot for another 20 to 30 minutes, or until puffy.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Bake the rolls for 15 to 18 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
  11. Immediately brush the tops of the hot rolls with the remaining 1/4 cup melted butter.
  12. Serve the soft dinner rolls warm.

Notes

  • For an extra golden and shiny crust, you can brush the tops of the rolls with one lightly beaten egg mixed with 1 teaspoon of water before the final rise.
  • If your kitchen is cool, place the covered bowl of dough in a slightly warm oven (turned off) to encourage rising.
  • These buttery homemade bread rolls are excellent when served with honey butter.
