Make this one pan ground beef skillet for an easy weeknight rice meal that captures the savory, deep onion flavor of French Onion Soup without the fuss.
Heat olive oil in a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes until they are deeply caramelized and brown. This step builds the French Onion flavor.
Push the onions to one side of the skillet. Add the ground beef to the empty side and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
Stir the cooked beef and onions together. Add the minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir well to coat everything. Cook for 1 minute.
Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir in the dried thyme. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
Stir in the uncooked rice. Cover the skillet tightly, reduce the heat to low, and cook for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Do not lift the lid during this time.
Remove the skillet from the heat. Let it stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice mixture gently with a fork.
If using, sprinkle the Gruyère cheese evenly over the top. Cover the skillet again for 2 to 3 minutes until the cheese is melted and gooey.
Garnish with fresh parsley before serving this hearty one pot meal with beef.
Notes
For faster onion caramelization, add a pinch of sugar to the onions while cooking.
You can substitute Swiss cheese for Gruyère if needed for this easy French Onion flavor recipe.
If you prefer a thicker consistency, use 3 cups of beef broth instead of 4.
