Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding mix (prepared according to package directions)
  • 1 box (14.4 ounces) graham crackers, crushed (or 1 package pound cake, cubed)
  • 4 medium apples (like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples: In a medium bowl, toss the diced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
  2. Make the cheesecake layer: In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Gently fold in half of the thawed whipped topping until just combined.
  3. Prepare the pudding: Mix the vanilla pudding according to package directions until thick. Fold in the remaining half of the whipped topping.
  4. Assemble the base layer: In a large glass trifle bowl, spread half of the crushed graham crackers (or pound cake cubes) across the bottom.
  5. Create the first layers: Spoon half of the cheesecake mixture over the crumbs. Top the cheesecake layer with half of the spiced apple mixture. Drizzle generously with half of the caramel sauce.
  6. Add the second layers: Spoon all of the vanilla pudding mixture over the caramel layer. Top the pudding with the remaining spiced apples.
  7. Finish the trifle: Spread the remaining cheesecake mixture over the apples. Top with the remaining graham cracker crumbs. Drizzle the remaining caramel sauce over the top layer for decoration.
  8. Chill: Cover the trifle and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the layers to set and flavors to meld. Serve cold.

Notes

  • For a quicker assembly, use store-bought spiced apple pie filling instead of preparing fresh apples.
  • If you use pound cake cubes, lightly brush them with a tablespoon of melted butter mixed with a pinch of cinnamon sugar before layering for extra flavor.
  • This make ahead holiday dessert tastes best when chilled for 8 hours.
