Make this easy apple crumble for a comforting dessert. It features tender, spiced apples beneath a perfectly crunchy, buttery oat topping. This simple baked apple dessert is ready in under an hour and is a family favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium baking apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for apples)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, prepare the crumble topping. Whisk together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining. Do not overmix; you want a crumbly texture for a crisp topping.
  6. Sprinkle the buttery oat topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  7. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  8. Let the apple crumble cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for the best experience.

Notes

  • To prevent a soggy crumble topping, ensure your butter is very cold when mixing the topping ingredients.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour in the topping mixture.
  • If you prefer a sweeter filling, increase the apple sugar to 1/3 cup.
